Prefabricated VS Custom ADUs: Which is best for you?
ADUs are one of the most popular topics amongst homeowners in Southern California. There are many reasons for wanting to invest in an ADU — primarily for extra income.
Before starting this project, there is one thing to bear in mind and that is, what works best for your needs; prefabricated or a custom ADU?
Well, what’s the difference?
A prefabricated ADU, commonly referred to as a “prefab ADU”, is a premade unit that is then transported to your property for installation. Since it is built in a construction-controlled environment, the completion time Is quicker and costs less, although customization is limited.
Benefits of owning a prefab ADU:
1. Quick completion time, they are typically built and installed within a few months
2. Lower cost, with less customization a better estimate can be provided
3. Less on-site disruption, when your ADU is chosen and ordered the number of installers is reduced.
Custom ADUs are designed and built on-site and to your desire. That includes property layout, aesthetic, and functionality.
Benefits of owning a custom ADU:
1. Design, they are fully tailored to you.
2. Property value, the value of your home increases.
Things to consider:
1. Longer timeframe, some custom ADUs are very time consuming depending on the intricacy of blueprint
2. Higher cost, with something so personalized on this large of a scale, expenses come alongside.
All in all, whether you choose a prefab or custom ADU it’s a great addition to any home.
